The Art of Pottery Making

Hello Blog Followers!

Today was a very exciting day for all the Vindolanda Field School kids. We had a lovely and extremely challenging hike today from Birdoswald fort to Haltwhistle. I won’t bore you with my literally uphill battle or my desire to actually collapse an live on the hill with the sheep for eternity.

What I will disclose is what an amazing time we had watching the wonderful Graham Taylor show us how to make Roman pottery. He was stationed at the Birdoswald Museum, and literally was one of today’s highlights. He astounded us with his ability to take a clump of ordinary looking clay, and before our eyes, spin it into a vase!!! It took like three minutes and TADA a vase!!! It was insanely cool!! Mr. Taylor did an amazing job today and really helped the students feel history come to life as well as give us a new appreciation for pottery as an art form.
