Hello everyone! My name is Meagan Robinson and I just finished my second year in Classical Studies at Western. This is my first time excavating and I’m so excited to have the opportunities the field school provides. I have always been interested in Greek and Roman history and archeology and to experience it first hand is amazing. I have also never been to England before and so far its been amazing. The scenery is absolutely beautiful.
So far we have had two days on site at Vindolanda, touring around, getting the history behind the site and setting up the trench. Apparently the trench is already starting to look like a good site so it should be super fun. Today we went on a hike from Birdoswald to Cawfield. We stopped at the museum at Birdoswald and at the Roman Army Museum. We hiked along Hadrian’s Wall, stopping to look at all the different features (milecastles, forts, and towers). We also stopped at Thirlwall Castle. It was absolutely amazing (though torture for your legs because of the hills) to see the wall and imagine how the Romans actually managed to build something like that.
So Far its been amazing and I’m sure it will continue to be over the next six weeks. I’m looking forward to it.
Until next time,
