Fortuitous meetings in Edinburgh and on the Antonine Wall

Andrew gave a fantastic presentation in the National Museum Scotland about Roman armour, parade cavalry helmets and other fantastic things the Romans left behind. This museum is amazing!

We went to see the Antonine Wall (ca. 142-160 AD) on Sunday and by chance met up with Ian Haynes and his group of Newcastle students having a tour of Bar Hill with David Breeze. This was our first glimpse of the Antonine Wall and the incredible size of the ditch out front (you can see it in this picture on the left) and we lucked out enormously having a tour of the site with such an expert of the area! We trekked with them to another fort at Bearsden and saw a terrific bathhouse.

We’re back to Hadrian’s Wall country and back in the trenches at Vindolanda this week. Can’t wait!
